HOW TO BE HAPPY INSTRUCTIONS; THE MOVIE

The Happy Film Titles from {group theory} on Vimeo.

Designer/filmmaker Hillman Curtis and designer Stefan Sagmeister have collaborated on a feature-length film for well over a year.
The Happy Film was conceived as a documentary that looks at the strategies serious psychologists recommend to improve personal well-being and overall happiness. "'Is it possible to train our mind in the same way that we train our bodies?' and 'Can we change our behavior to make us happier?' are the main themes," Curtis explained. And Sagmeister, known for issuing manifesto-like maxims as mammoth environmental typographic happenings, poses these questions through "self-experiments and explorations" that are loosely based on his 2009 book of typographic truisms, Things I Have Learned in My Life So Far
But why happiness? "Even though I normally don't enjoy quoting other people," Sagmeister responded in his lilting Viennese accent, "I'll answer this question with a quote anyway, from the 17th-century philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal. 'All men seek happiness. This is without exception. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. This is the motive of every action of every man, even those who hang themselves.' That's why!"

THE RETROFUTURE OF KILIAN ENG

Kilian Eng’s work is amazing. The guy's work is filled with pop culture influences. You can see traces of Daft Punk, Blade Runner, Tron and retro sci-fi from several miles away. Thing is, none of these individual elements overshadow Kilian’s unique art direction – a sort of retro-futuristic mysticism.

CAT HEARS READ YOUR MIND

Although they look like a cheap Harajuku novelty, the Necomimi cat ears are at the cutting edge of Kawaii technology. Simply strap them to your head and they’ll start reacting to your brainwaves. For realz. Depending on whether you’re focused or relaxed (or hungry, distracted, sexy, etc) they’ll either perk up, or fall flat, or do a half-and-half show.

REALLY COOL DJS

Watching a DJ playing has never been as cool. Since laptops replaced turntables the typical DJ set has descended into little more than some dude hunched over a screen pressing buttons. Thing is, it wasn’t always like that. Back in '80s DJs were showmen in their own right and would incorporate all sorts of routines and tricks into their sets to grab the crowd’s attention. The Emulator Multi-Touch Professional DJ System brings back that crowd interaction.

DRAW ME WITH YOUR IPAD

Currently on exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark is "Me Draw on IPad." The exhibition has several hundred of David Hockney's drawings that he has done with the Brushes application on his IPhone and more recently on his IPad. The works are displayed on 20 ITouches, 20 IPads, and a triptych slide show directed by Hockney specifically for the show.

For some of the drawings, the viewers can see the artist's process from start to finish with the help of the animation playback feature of the Brushes app. Through out the exhibition, Hockney will be occasionally sending new drawings via email to add to the collection. This new medium for drawing is a way for the artist to explore his craft. As stated in the museum's press release, "Hockney loves looking and drawing and has said that his current work in all media has allowed him to see and feel nature much more clearly. He draws to see, and he calls it self-deception if we assume we have seen all the dimensions of nature."

POLAR BEAR ON THE BUS

A 36-year-old bear who performed during the 1980 Moscow Olympics has been kept with other retired circus animals in a rusty old bus parked on the outskirts of St. Petersburg for two years. Animal rights activists say they receive only minimal care in their cramped and stinking cages.Katya the bear was a longtime star of the Big St. Petersburg State Circus on Fontanka, where night after night she and another bear delighted children by riding motorcycles around the ring.

During the 1980 Summer Games, the bears were applauded by thousands at a ceremony opening the football competition in St. Petersburg, then called Leningrad. Katya also performed in two films released in the 1980s.
Since her retirement in 2009, Katya and the painted bus on which she once toured with the circus have not left a parking lot near a busy highway. The ageing bear spends the long hours jumping up and down in her cage and trying to crack the rusty metal railings with her chipped and yellowed teeth.
Dozens of other retired circus animals also live in the smelly cages placed inside the bus and a minivan parked nearby.
SHAME ON YOU!

MATT FRERKIN: PARALIZED BY LOVE. LITERALY.

Matt Frerking, 39, from Portland, Oregon, is left immobile if he even has a romantic thought or sees others showing displays of affection.
The affliction has been diagnosed as a combination of the chronic sleeping disorder narcolepsy with cataplexy, a sudden weakening of the muscles which renders the person temporarily immobile but still aware of their surroundings and able to hear.
For Mr Frerking the feeling that sparks an attack is love and being around his family can send him into a state of physical paralysis.
He is unable to put his arm around Trish, his wife of 13 years, and suffers attacks on anniversaries. He can suffer attacks several times a day
“Holding hands in public is something that we can do for a few seconds at most, and that’s about it,” Mr Frerking said.

GHOST BY RAMADA HOTEL?

"There's a crying baby ghost in our room!". That's what a couple of guests by the Ramada Hotel in Watford, England, screamed at the receptionist the night of may 10th. They complained crying about a child ghost moving around their locked room. The hotel manager didn't belive them, but moved the guests into another room for the night. And that's what the English pair published at the end of their holidays. Freaky.
