°THE OCCUPIED WALL STREET JOURNAL°
The Occupy Wall Street protests now have a newspaper of record, the Occupied Wall Street Journal. The début issue of the OWSJ is four pages long and printed in full color.
The paper's tone is revolutionary: “What is occurring on Wall Street
right now is remarkable. For over two weeks, in the great cathedral of
capitalism, the dispossessed have liberated territory from the financial
overlords and their police army.
Occupy Wall Street Media is not the “official” media of the occupation—
there is no official media! This is one attempt by a group of
journalists who support the occupation to offer a way for the general
public to hear the stories, perspectives and ideas from inside the
movement. We think the more voices, ideas and media the better.

ABANDONED. AMAZING YEAH YEAH YEAHSSSS
In the film, director David Altobelli tells the story of three boys exploring an empty house late one night. The boys break into a farmhouse that was clearly abandoned in a hurry some time ago. As the three explore the house - and even begin to vandalize it - one boy slowly comes to see that the family that lived there was not so different from his own. He realizes that the house they are trashing could foreshadow the future of his own family's farm and home. A frightening moment in the house sends the boys running back to the comfort of their still-functioning farms.
On the soundtrack, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs covers Willie Nelson's country music classic "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys."

PETA VS. UGGS
Just when you thought that footwear involving the mutilation of millions of sheep couldn't get any uglier, several makers of knock-off UGG-style boots have been found to use fur from animals who were beaten and skinned alive. Since you never can be sure whose fur ends up on your boots, coat, or gloves, the best thing to do is avoid all fur. http://bit.ly/rpHEgM
MEET AAV2: THE BREAST CANCER KILLER
Scientists at the Penn State College of Medicine said this week they
have discovered a virus that is capable of killing all grades of breast
cancer “within seven days” of first introduction in a laboratory
setting.
The virus, known as adeno-associated virus type 2 (AAV2), is
naturally occurring and carried by up to 80 percent of humans, but it
does not cause any disease.
Researchers learned of its cancer-killing properties in 2005, after
Penn State scientists observed it killing cervical cancer cells. They
also found that women who carried the AAV2 virus and human
papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer, had a lower
propensity to develop cervical cancer.
When combined in a lab recently, AAV2 eradicated all the breast
cancer cells “within seven days,” according to researchers. Better
still, it proved capable of wiping out cancer cells at multiple stages,
negating the need for differing treatments used today.
“If we can determine which viral genes are being used, we may be able to introduce those genes into a [therapy],” explained Penn State research associate Samina Alam.
“If we can determine which pathways the virus is triggering, we can
then screen new drugs that target those pathways. Or we may simply be
able to use the virus itself.”
The Center for Disease Control says that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting American women. Overall, it is second only to lung cancer in causing more deaths than any other form of the disease.
The American Cancer Society estimates that up to 39,520 women in the
U.S. will die from cancer just this year, out of about 230,480 new cases
discovered by doctors.

"DISENCHANTED" by JOSE' RODOLFO LOAIZA ONTIVEROS
"Disenchanted" is a series of paintings from up-and-coming Mexican artist José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros. Appropriating beloved Disney heroes and heroines, Ontiveros places them in the darker human realities of perversion, voyeurism, and addiction. He also utilizes the contextual irony of his work to tackle more complicated issues, such as sexuality and faith.
